A key milestone in 2023 was the agreement between the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union on the European Pact on Asylum and Migration. Over the past year, irregular migration to the EU also increased, and the number of applications for international protection (asylum) reached its highest level since 2016.
The 2023 Annual Report on Migration and Asylum from the European Migration Network highlights these and other trends. It provides a comprehensive overview of the main policy developments and legal changes in the field of migration and asylum in 2023 in the EU Member States and EMN observer countries. A detailed annex with all figures and trends in clear statistics, compiled by Eurostat, is part of the report.
